Protecting Your Home During Hurricane Season!

·

by Nichol Wallace

June 1st was the start of the hurricane season. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we should expect a 40% near normal season that will run until 30 November with approximately 12-17 named storms in the Atlantic. Thus far, we have been experiencing a lot of rain in Florida, so while the following measures are not limited to the hurricane season, they should be top of mind for protecting your home.

“Take all necessary precautions to safeguard against water damages!”

  • Keep trees, plants and shrubs properly trimmed and groomed.
  • Ensure exterior doors are hurricane proof, and weather strips and seals are in good condition.
  • Make every effort to fix roof leaks regardless of how minor you believe them to be.
  • Inspect your home for cracks and holes, and get them fixed as soon as possible.
  • Ensure loose roof tiles are secured, or broken barrels are replaced.
  • Ensure that you have enough sandbags.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are in good working order.
  • Replace cracked door and window panes
  • Fix damaged seals around windows
  • Have a plan in place for outdoor furniture and other immovable items
  • Ensure your property manager(s) conduct detailed inspections on your rentals, and discrepancies are fixed ASAP. NOTE: Here at Victoria Gregory Group Shoe Realty Inc. inspections are completed twice annually by a professional inspection team, and the findings are communicated to the owners. They take pictures and annotate results in a formal report which is kept on file.

For most of us, our home is one of, if not the most valuable asset we own. The above measures are necessary to ensure you protect this asset. They also help to either maintain or increase the value of your property. Many houses today sell for less due to a lack of maintenance. Make the repairs when the issues are small, as the repairs will be less expensive. Be vigilant. Be intrusive. After heavy rains, take a walk around your home and look for any signs of leaks or damages, and get them fixed immediately. You will be glad you did.

In the event you decide to sell your home, you want to ensure that it is in good shape. Believe it or not, too many houses are currently sitting on the market longer than normal because of poor maintenance. Don’t let that be yours. Take the necessary steps to protect your asset today.
